World War II has been a traditional been breeding ground for aerial-combat videogames, with 1941 and the subsequent games in that series taking more than their fair share of quarters from gamers’ pockets. With the advent of the movie Top Gun, the Afterburner games showed a new take on aerial combat, this one with much more oomph and firepower. Yet much as WWII has inspired a resurgence of PC and console shooters, the war has also reinvigorated the aerial combat scene, with several publishers releasing dogfighting games in recent years.
