Released in March of 1999, ParSoft Interactive's Fighter Squadron: Screamin' Demons over Europe (FS:SDOE) is a WWII air combat simulation set in three theaters of war: Britain (Dover), Germany (Rhineland), and North Africa. Out of the box, and without the necessary CD bug fix patch, FS:SDOE received a lukewarm reception from the sim critics. What it didn't have out-of-the-box, however, was quickly addressed by the user community. FS:SDOE, unlike most other sims, is very add-on friendly because all objects (aircraft, building, etc.) are based on the freely available OpenPlane™ specification. Because of its highly open structure, the end-user community has created amazing add-ons for this sim: dozens of new planes (including WWI bi-planes), new nations and squadron add-ons, skins galore, stereo sounds . . . the list goes on. As you might expect, Fighter Squadron: SDOE has a very active, talented and loyal community, most of whom can usually be found hanging out at the Fighter Squadron Information Center message boards.
