The AOE3 time period saw the Russian culture shift from its Asian influence to its European one. Russia was at war through much of the time period, perhaps because the country bordered so many others, perhaps because the lack of major geographic features made invasion and counter-invasion easy, and certainly because of Russia's constant drive to establish ports. Two of the most infamous Russian leaders in this period were Ivan the Terrible, the first Tsar, and Peter the Great, who turned Russia into the largest country in the world at the time. Some people are surprised to learn that the Russians actually did found colonies in the New World. Unlike other Europeans, they came to the west coast, founding settlements in Alaska and as far south as California.
