Every year has its ups and downs, and 2008 was no different. Jim Cobb takes a look at the three big trends that defined the past year of gaming.

I hate “Wargame of the Year” polls, elections, votes, what-have-you. For that matter, I hate MVP watches, Heisman trophies, beauty pageants, “reality” shows and anything foisting superlatives on us. Simon Cowell must wince when forced to elevate “good” to “best”. If something or somebody has to be on top, do it through a play-off system. Given the impossibility of objectivity, all we need is a broad list of games we feel comfortable recommending to gamers – and that’s what reviews are for. Therefore, my retrospective on gaming in 2008 will concentrate on trends rather than specific games that struck my fancy at some point.
