AMD released the latest version of Radeon Software Crimson Edition, its software suite which provides drivers and system software for Radeon GPUs and IGPs. Version 16.3 improves performance for “Rise of the Tomb Raider” on Radeon R9 Fury X series GPUs by up to 16 percent (compared to version 16.2), and for “Gears of War Ultimate Edition,” by as high as 60 percent on the R9 Fury X series (compared to version 16.2.1), and by up to 44 percent on Radeon R9 380 series (compared to version 16.2.1).

Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.3 also adds official support for the Vulkan API; 2-display Eyefinity, an accessible CrossFire status indicator, a new power-efficiency toggle for Radeon R9 300 series and R9 Fury series GPUs. With version 16.3, AMD is introducing the XConnect Technology, a new standard for external graphics enclosures over not just high-bandwidth interfaces such as Thunderbolt 3, but also the more accessible USB 3.1 interface. AMD is providing the software ecosystem that lets you plug-and-play external GPUs for instant boosts in performance and functionality. AMD is also adding/updating CrossFire profiles for “Hitman (2016)”, and “The Park.”

NVIDIA beat AMD to being the first with a WHQL-signed graphics driver Vulkan API support. The new GeForce 364.47 WHQL drivers include support for the new low-overhead API that gives game developers greater access to hardware features, and saps lower CPU overhead. The drivers are also game-ready for “Tom Clancy’s The Division,” the 2016 reboots of “Hitman,” and “Need for Speed,” and “Ashes of the Singularity.”

AMD released the latest version of Radeon Software Crimson Edition. Version 16.2.1 is marked “non-WHQL” and hence should be a beta. The driver comes with a CrossFireX profile for “Far Cry Primal,” along with a variety of game-specific bug fixes for “Fallout 4,” and “Rise of the Tomb Raider.” It also fixes an issue of choppy display on systems with both FreeSync and CrossFire being enabled. You can download the latest driver here.

It’s hard to believe that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 is still a viable cutting edge graphics card today as it first debuted along with the GeForce GTX 980 in September 2014! Over the past 1.5 years the GeForce GTX 970 has become a very popular card for 1080P gaming as it features a competitive price point and you can more times than not get 60 FPS on average with the image quality cranked up in game titles. The add-in board (AIB) partners have continued to release new GeForce GTX 970 video cards over the years and just before 2015 ended our friends over at EVGA announced that the EVGA HYBRID line was being expanded to include GeForce GTX 970. This is great news for those that are concerned about GPU temperatures as you can now buy purchase a GTX 970 that features a maintenance free closed loop ‘all in one’ water cooling solution that significantly lowers the GPU operating temperature.

AMD has released a new set of Radeon Software Crimson Edition graphics card drivers, version 16.1.1 Hotfix, which are optimized for Rise of the Tomb Raider which launched on PC a couple of days ago.

The 16.1.1 Hotfix drivers bring performance optimizations and a Crossfire profile for Rise of the Tomb Raider, as well as a long-awaited Crossfire profile for Fallout 4. Both Nvidia and, to a greater extent, AMD have struggled to get multi-GPU configurations working in Fallout 4, although a recent patch to the game (which also brings HBAO+ and new debris effects) might have improved the situation as well.

Aside from optimizations for the two aforementioned games, the 16.1.1 Hotfix drivers are mostly concerned with addressing bugs. These drivers include fixes for the Radeon Settings app, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate on FreeSync setups, Star Wars: Battlefront, Dota 2, and Battlefield Hardline. There are still known issues, but that’s the case with most driver releases.

Download the 16.1.1 Hotfix here.

NVIDIA rolled out a Hotfix driver update for its recently released GeForce 361.75 Game Ready drivers. The new GeForce 361.82 Hotfix driver corrects a bug which makes your installed GPUs appear as removable devices in your system tray (much like removable storage devices). It may have been a bug in the implementation of support for external graphics solutions over Thunderbolt 3, introduced with 361.75 WHQL. The hotfix driver addresses the issue.

If you find a 300-megabyte download worth fixing the bug (i.e. you often accidentally “eject” your graphics cards (unload display driver) while trying to unmount your external storage devices), then grab the driver for your OS from the link below.
