AMD has released the latest update to its Radeon graphics drivers in the form of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.8.1, which brings a list of improvements and bug fixes. Starting off, the new driver brings support for Horizon Zero Dawn PC port, which is coming out this Friday. Next, the driver brings some improvements to the performance of the Radeon 5700XT graphics card, which scored 9% higher FPS in the game Grounded, when using Epic preset. Another important supporting feature is for game Hyper Scape, which this new driver enables.

AMD late Thursday released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 graphics drivers. Version 20.7.1 beta adds optimization for “Disintegration.” The software also introduces an improved AMD Bug Report Tool. A number of bugs were fixed with this release including stuttering observed on machines running RX 5000 series GPUs with Radeon Replay enabled; “Vega” based graphics cards experiencing performance loss with Performance Metrics enabled; an error switching between apps while previewing your stream; custom fan- and clock- tuning settings not applying in Radeon Performance tuning tab or retaining after reboot; and display resolution failing to stretch with display scaling enabled in CS:GO. Bugs related to Valorant, DOTA2, and DOOM Eternal were also fixed.

NVIDIA today released GeForce 451.67 WHQL Game Ready drivers. The drivers provide optimization for “Death Stranding,” “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” and F1 2020. Among the issues fixed are a bug that caused refresh rates of 144 Hz monitors not being able to set above 120 Hz, SLI + G-Sync causing driver TDR crash on machines with “Kepler” GPUs; random crashes with “Detroit: Become Human,” Lumetri color panel adjustments causing videos in Adobe Premiere Pro to appear noisy; system crashes observed with GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (mobile).

AMD has released its first public beta driver that enables graphics hardware scheduling feature support with Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004). This oddball release has the same version number as the previous-release, version 20.5.1 Beta, but with graphics hardware scheduling retrofitted. The driver hence ships with the version name “Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.5.1 Beta with Graphics Hardware Scheduling.” This Microsoft-supplied feature allows GPU hardware to better manage its resources, and potentially improve performance in certain applications. Currently, only AMD’s RDNA-based Radeon RX 5600-series and RX 5700-series GPUs support graphics hardware scheduling – not even the RX 5500-series gets it; older generation AMD GPUs, such as the RX Vega series lack it, too.

AMD on Tuesday re-released its Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.4.2 graphics drivers as a WHQL-signed driver. The company hasn’t released a driver update since April 21 (the same 20.4.2 as a beta). With no new AAA game releases, there probably wasn’t much AMD could do. Then again, 20.4.2 beta came with a long list of “known issues” (new issues identified by AMD that needed to be solved), which could have been fixed in the last 35 days or so. The WHQL is identical to the beta. It comes with optimization for Gears Tactics and Predator: Hunting Grounds, and fixes a handful of issues.

NVIDIA has today launched the latest version of its “Game Ready” graphics driver lineup with the 446.14 WHQL drivers. This release brings mostly performance optimizations and bug fixes for the video game Valorant. In addition to these performance optimizations and fixes, optimal support for Minecraft Dungeons, Disintegration, and Crucible is included. An important new feature update is the inclusion of Variable Rate Supersampling (VRSS) support for Onward. NVIDIA has also fixed driver installation issues on Colorful GeForce GTX 1650 that may have bugged some users of the cards.

NVIDIA has released GeForce software version 445.87 WHQL. The drivers come game-ready for “Minecraft with RTX” beta. Optimization is also added for “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: Campaign Remastered,” “Saints Row: The Third Remastered,” and “SnowRunner.” Among the issues fixed are a BSOD noticed with “Rise of the Tomb Raider” in DirectX 12 mode, a black flickering in “Doom Eternal,” some DirectX 11 games failing to launch with Image Sharpening being enabled, and a graphical corruption when waking up a notebook display from sleep.

AMD has released a new beta driver on their Radeon Software Adrenalin suite. Driver number 20.4.1 beta brings with it support for Capcom’s Resident Evil 3, on which we’ve already written a deep-dive performance article for you to peruse (heads-up: it’s a pretty good and pretty good-looking game).

Alongside this support, AMD has also fixed a number of issues, including black screens or application hangs in both Overwatch and heroes of the Storm. One important known issue that is listed is the chance of a black screen or system hang when running Folding@Home while also running an application using hardware acceleration of video content. We shan’t have that – so if you run into issues like these whilst offering your processing power to the world, beware. (Release Notes)

NVIDIA rolled out the GeForce software 445.78 Hotfix drivers. Hotfixes are released to expeditiously correct glaring bugs with GeForce software. The 445.78 Hotfix corrects a bug that causes some DirectX 11 games to fail to launch when Image Sharpening is globally enabled from the NVIDIA Control Panel. The drivers are otherwise identical to GeForce 445.75 software released earlier this week.

NVIDIA today announced its new Deep Learning Supersampling 2.0 (DLSS 2.0) performance enhancement feature, being distributed through the new GeForce 445.75 Game Ready drivers. DLSS 2.0 is NVIDIA’s second attempt at a holy grail of performance boost at acceptable levels of quality loss (think what MP3 did to WAV). It works by rendering the 3D scene at a lower resolution than what your display is capable of, and upscaling it with deep-learning reconstructing details using a pre-trained neural network. Perhaps the two biggest differences between DLSS 2.0 and the original DLSS that made its debut with GeForce RTX 20-series in 2018, is the lack of a need for game-specific content for training the DLSS neural net; and implementation of a rendering technique called temporal feedback.

As mentioned earlier, DLSS 2.0 offers image quality comparable to original resolution while only rendering 1/4 or1/2 the pixels. It then uses new temporal feedback techniques to reconstruct details in the image. DLSS 2.0 is also able to use tensor cores on GeForce RTX GPUs “more efficiently,” to execute “2x faster” than the original DLSS. Lastly, DLSS 2.0 gives users greater control over the image quality, which affects the rendering resolution of your game: quality, balanced (1:2), and performance (1:4), where the ratio denotes rendering-resolution to display resolution. Resolution scaling is a sure-shot way to gain performance, but at noticeable quality loss. DLSS uses AI to restore some of the details. The difference between performance gained from resolution scaling and AI-based image quality enhancement is the net DLSS performance uplift. In addition to DLSS 2.0, GeForce 445.75 drivers come game-ready for “Half Life: Alyx.”
