First-Person Shooters

wolfenstein-youngbloodI do Nazi this as a step in the right direction for Wolfenstein.

By Dan Stapleton @ IGN

Most parents hope that their kids will one day surpass them, but failing that we’ll settle for staying out of prison and not asking for money too often. So if I were in the shoes of legendary run-and-gun shooter protagonist William “BJ” Blazkowicz, I wouldn’t be mad about my twin daughters’ debut performance in Wolfenstein: Youngblood, but I would be disappointed. The young Blazkowiczs’ approach to co-op is, on the whole, serviceable but does cramp the style of its inherited trust fund of combat and stealth gameplay. Without a similarly outlandish cast of characters to liven up the alternate-history setting in which Nazis won WWII with the help of fire-breathing robot dogs, it’s perfunctory compared to the extremely high standard set by Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus.

tannenberg-1914-1918Free expansion for Tannenberg – new squad, weapons and Baltic map!

Blackmill Games and M2H announce that a new free expansion for their WW1 Eastern Front shooter Tannenberg has been released. Join the Latvian Riflemen in their battle against German invaders on a swampy new map set along the Baltic coast, wielding new weapons including smoke and gas grenades!

Watch the trailer and get a look at the marshes and dunes of the new Baltic region.

Players can buy Tannenberg now on Steam for 50% off!

Free expansion introduces Latvia
The latest free expansion for Tannenberg introduces the Latvian Riflemen, a marshy Baltic map, and new weapons for Russian and German forces – including special grenades which will allow players to deploy smoke and gas without waiting for an artillery barrage for the first time in the WW1 Game Series.

In 1915, as the Germans advanced into Latvian territory, the Russian Tsar gave his approval for the creation of Latvian Riflemen units. Despite Russian efforts, there was still a strong nationalist streak in the Latvian people, and Latvian politicians argued that all-Latvian formations would fight hard to push back the Germans. They were proved right – due to the high number of volunteers, three battalions were formed rather than two as had been originally planned.

Meet the Latvian Riflemen
In Tannenberg, the Latvian Riflemen are a support squad equipped primarily with Japanese import rifles and older Winchesters. They are renowned for their composure under fire, and their NCO ability can remove weapon sway at key moments in battle, allowing perfect shots by skilled marksmen. For trench assaults they carry plenty of grenades and a few squad members carry the iconic US M1911 pistol.
Several weapons have been added to the game – Latvian troops will be able to use the newly added Japanese Arisaka Type 38 and Colt 1911 pistol, while Russian squads get the Vetterli M1870/87 and chemical gas grenades. German troops gain access to the Type N Nebelbombe smoke grenade. These last two special gas grenades are a first for the WW1 Game Series, and will give players new tactical options for attack and defense.

Brave the new Baltic map
Arriving along with the Latvian Riflemen is a new map set in their home region! The Baltic map features distinctive wooden fortifications built on and around the lakes and swamps. Lead assaults across pontoon bridges, or scramble for cover amidst the sand dunes and pine forests surrounding the marshes. The variety in terrain will challenge even the most seasoned Tannenberg players!

Lead Developer Jos Hoebe said: ‘Creating a map for the Baltic regions was especially interesting due to the swampy terrain, which isn’t something we’ve represented in the WW1 Game Series so far – the Flanders map in our earlier game Verdun probably comes closest. Combining the different landscapes found in the Baltic region into a single map was challenging, but we’re very happy with the result, bringing a novel battlefield to the game.

Bethesda releases the PC version of Wolfenstein: Youngblood on Thursday, one day earlier than planned. However, it will be lacking RTX support with its initial release. Something NVIDIA advertised massively with. Raytracing is to be added later with a patch.

You can expect the game for PC this Thursday Bethesda mentions on Twitter. Wolfenstein makes use of the Vulkan API and would be the first game with that API to get RTX support.

tom-clancy-ghost-recon-wildlandsNew Game Mode ‘Mercenaries’ Will Be Available From July 18th

Ubisoft has announced a free brand new game mode for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, “Mercenaries”, which will be available from July 18th . Mercenaries is an eight-player free-for-all PvPvE gameplay experience. The objective is to call for rescue, locate and reach the extraction point, then be the first to board the chopper. The new game mode will be available on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X and Windows PC.

Watch the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands – Mercenaries Trailer HERE.

At the beginning of the match, the extraction point is unknown and players will have no ranged weapons, gear or items. Players will need to locate and activate radio transmitters to shrink the possible extract zone on the map. In the meantime, players will fight to be the first to gain intel on transmitter locations while looting gear, weapons and money. After the first player has activated three transmitters, the chopper will head to the extraction point and once landed, the location will be revealed to everyone. The first player to fill their extraction gauge and board the chopper wins.

Mercenaries mode introduces a wealth of new mechanics including:

  • Looting for Gear: Players start the game just with a melee weapon and will need to find the best gear, weapons and consumables to fight the Unidad forces and enemy players. If a player dies, they will lose all of the loot gathered and start at square one when they respawn.
  • Armor: Mercenaries mode will feature a new health and armor system. Based on the gear players pick up, an armor bar will appear. This bar will absorb a percentage of damage based on the penetration capability of the opponent’s weapon.
  • Health: If players are hit by a weapon that deals penetration damage, they will bleed and gradually lose a percentage of their health. If they are injured, they will be able to loot three different types of healing items to get back into fighting shape: medikits, bandages and syringes.
  • Destructible Doors: Destructible doors can be opened with CQC, behind which players may find intel, loot, or cover to aid them in their fight. Players will need to think tactically about when to use this as opponents will be able to hear the breaking doors if they are close by.

Additionally, as a thank-you to players, the Lone Wolf Costume will be given as a reward after completing their first match. Along with the Lone Wolf Costume, players will be able to receive a series of rewards based on their wins.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands also has a Rewards Program available to all players until September 27th, 2019. Jump back into the Wildlands, complete the set challenges, and redeem special rewards in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. All rewards will also unlock unique ‘Memories of the Wildlands’ dialogues. More information can be found at: ghostrecon.com/RewardsProgram
