Arma 3

Winning creations will be assembled in a new charity DLC supporting the International Committee of the Red Cross

Bohemia Interactive today announce the Arma 3 Art of War contest , which will ultimately form the basis for a charity DLC of the same name in aid of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). A short promo video, has also been released to further publicize the event.

Arma 3′s creative community of artists and modders are all invited to submit original 2D artworks and cosmetic 3D assets across four contest categories. The winning entries – along with two new singleplayer scenarios, specially designed by Bohemia Interactive to showcase them – will be made available as a small downloadable content package (DLC) later this year.

100% of Bohemia Interactive’s proceeds from the Arma 3 Art of War DLC after taxes will be donated to the ICRC to support their response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their continued humanitarian efforts in providing protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. The expected price of the charity DLC is 2.99 USD / EUR / GBP, with two optional higher price tiers of 9.99 USD / EUR / GBP and 19.99 USD / EUR / GBP for those who wish to donate extra. After approximately 10 months of being on sale, the Art of War DLC will become permanently free for all Arma 3 players to enjoy, and Bohemia Interactive will announce the total donation raised.

The Arma 3 Art of War contest is divided into four categories: props, character accessories, character clothing, and a special 2D artwork category in any medium on the theme of International Humanitarian Law in future conflict. Entries in the latter will be displayed in a virtual in-game gallery, where players can learn about the challenges that various new technologies might present to organisations such as the ICRC. In addition, a second short scenario will be developed by Bohemia Interactive in response to the winning assets from the 3D categories.

Besides supporting a charitable cause, contest participants will also be able to win some art-inspired prizes. Bohemia Interactive will offer 1st place winners their choice of a Wacom Intuos S drawing tablet or a collection of professional art supplies, plus a limited edition T-shirt, silver medal, and a copy of the sumptuously illustrated book, War and Art. Similarly, 2nd and 3rd place winners will each receive a range of prizes, on top of the prestige of having their names in the developer credits.

Submissions are open as of today and will close on July 15, 2020. For more information on how to participate and the official contest rules, please visit the official Art of War page on the Arma 3 website.

Free bonus singleplayer scenario brings players back to Tanoa

Bohemia Interactive today released the Arma 3 Apex: Old Man open-world singleplayer scenario for their popular military simulation sandbox game, Arma 3. This bonus scenario is free for everyone who owns the Arma 3 Apex expansion. A newly deployed trailer provides a brief impression of Old Man’s plot and setting.

In support of this release, the Arma 3 base game and all Arma 3 downloadable content packs (DLC) are on sale from today until April 21 (10:00 PST/18:00 CEST) on both Steam and the Bohemia Store, with discounts of up to 70%. The Arma 3 Apex Edition, which includes the Arma 3, Arma 3 Apex, and three extra DLC packs, provides an additional 15% bundle discount.

In Arma 3 Apex: Old Man, the player assumes the role of a retired Legionnaire living on the South Pacific island of Tanoa. When a new strain of malaria causes yet another humanitarian crisis, and local authorities fail to distribute an effective vaccine to the civilian population, “Old Man” is tipped off about a possible plot. Together with a former military contact, he attempts to avert a catastrophic power play in the region.

The new scenario drops the player into Tanoa’s 100 square kilometer tropical terrain with just a few instructions. It’s up to the player to find their way around, gather intel, obtain weapons and equipment, and decide on the best tactics to accomplish objectives. While the scenario aims to offer an authentic experience, the player does have access to a few convenience features, such as the option to wait and skip time, and the ability to fast travel between known safe houses.

Arma 3 Apex: Old Man provides more than 10 hours of playtime. It is released together with a free platform update for all Arma 3 users. This update adds new static machine gun variants and several other assets to the game, and implements various fixes and improvements. The full changelog for update 1.98 can be found on the Arma 3 website.

Key features of Arma 3 Apex: Old Man

  • Shared Armaverse: After the events of the Arma 3 “The East Wind” and “Apex Protocol” campaigns, the South Pacific island nation of Tanoa is hit by yet another humanitarian crisis; a malaria outbreak. When authorities fail to distribute an effective vaccine, a local veteran is tipped off about a possible plot and sets out to uncover the truth.
  • Open World: Return to the jewel of the Horizon Islands and discover her many hidden secrets. Travel by land, sea, or even air – and stay in one of the many shelters to save your progress. Populated by CSAT soldiers, Gendarmerie officers, local insurgents, civilians, and aid workers, Tanoa draws you right into her long history of conflict and turmoil.
  • Sandbox Gameplay: “Old Man” presents you with a varied set of objectives, but how you accomplish these is completely up to you. Get creative and make good use of Arma 3’s diverse selection of weapons and explosives. Just remember; all missions are a matter of life and death – so consider your tactics, prepare your loadout, and always have an exit strategy ready.
  • Additional Content: The Old Man scenario comes with new static M2 .50 caliber machine gun variants, and adds new assets for community content creators to use, such as a Tanoa CSAT reskin of the Zamak truck, a red beret, malaria-infected civilian characters, and various decals and inventory items.

The beta version of the Arma 3 Apex: Old Man scenario was originally released in December last year via the Arma 3 Steam Workshop. Those who helped playtest the beta version are recommended to unsubscribe from the Steam Workshop item and restart the scenario to avoid compatibility issues.

ARMA 3′S NEW ‘OLD MAN’ SCENARIO TURNS THIS MILITARY SHOOTER INTO AN OPEN WORLD ADVENTURE

By Ian Boudreau @ Wargamer

Just before the holiday break, Bohemia Interactive dropped a bit of a bombshell on us: they were putting the beta version of the upcoming Old Man scenario for Arma 3 on the Steam Workshop for anyone to try out. Admittedly, I had not been paying a lot of attention to the latest in Arma news since Contact came out in the summer, so Old Man came as a complete surprise. And it’s continued to surprise me as I’ve played this huge scenario.

Old Man is a singleplayer scenario set on Tanoa, a fictional South Pacific island included with the Apex expansion. It pulls in elements of many of Arma 3′s other DLCs, but it’s doing something completely novel for an Arma 3 add-on. It feels somewhat surreal to say this, but some skunkworks project at Bohemia is creating the Arma 3 version of Far Cry, and it’s going to be free for all players (as long as you own Apex, that is).

arma-3-contactMilitary sci-fi campaign, terrain, weapons, vehicles, and more

What if humanity suddenly encounters extraterrestrial intelligence on Earth? Bohemia Interactive is proud to announce today’s worldwide release of the much-anticipated Arma 3 Contact spin-off expansion for its military simulation game, Arma 3. The new expansion is introduced in this launch trailer.

Declassified just a few weeks ago (watch announcement trailer), Arma 3 Contact delivers a military science fiction singleplayer campaign, in which you play as a NATO drone operator deployed to the (fictional) Eastern European country of Livonia. After the discovery of an unknown subsurface object and the sudden arrival of a massive alien vessel, you are sent out on a reconnaissance mission to investigate the extraterrestrial presence. The priority: to learn who they are and find out why they are here. However, amid all the tension and chaos, armed conflict inevitably unfolds.

Over the course of the “First Contact” campaign, players are expected to run into infantry combat encounters, but a significant portion of the campaign also features non-shooting gameplay. This involves studying strange alien anomalies by operating a mini UGV with an onboard sampling laser and biopsy probe, as well as taking control over the electromagnetic spectrum with the Spectrum Device. This tool serves as the player’s weapon of choice when it comes to electronic warfare, and can be used for gathering intel, jamming, and transmitting misinformation.

On top of the singleplayer campaign, the Arma 3 Contact expansion brings with it many additions to the wider Arma 3 platform (watch sandbox trailer). The biggest of all is a new 163 square kilometer terrain, which covers the militarized and partly abandoned Nadbór region inside the Polish-speaking country of Livonia. This temperate summer environment is composed of forests, farmland, towns, railroads, the Biela river, and various special landmarks such as an old munitions factory, an abandoned radar station, and several World War II bunkers.

Other highlights are the additional armed forces, namely the Livonian Defense Force and Russian Spetsnaz, five weapons, two vehicles, various gear, and a range of free bonus content for all Arma 3 players, including more than one hundred new decorative props and terrain objects for content creators to use in their projects. Furthermore, many of Arma 3’s official multiplayer modes can be played on the expansion’s Livonia terrain as well with new scenarios for Zeus Game Master, Combat Patrol, and Warlords.

Looking back at Contact’s concept phase, I’m very proud of how we managed to convert the many ideas into the original experience we’re releasing today. It tackles the ‘first contact’ premise in a way not yet seen in other games, while also showcasing the diversity of the Arma 3 platform,” said Arma 3 Contact Project Lead, Joris-Jan van ‘t Land. “Beyond the campaign experience, we’re also glad to be expanding the traditional Arma 3 sandbox with loads of cool content. I’m confident our community will be able to put this expansion to good use, and we hope everyone will have a lot of fun playing. The truth is out there!

Key Features of Arma 3 Contact

  • Singleplayer campaign “First Contact” – You are a member of a NATO training deployment to a remote region of Livonia, presented with a mysterious event that will forever change the face of human history.

  • 2 Factions – Livonian Defense Force and Russian Spetsnaz, equipped with their own gear, new character faces, and Polish or Russian radio protocols.
  • 5 Weapons – Promet Assault Rifle, RPK-12 Light Machine Gun, AKU-12 Carbine, Mk14 Classic Hunting Rifle, and Kozlice Shotgun.
  • 2 Vehicles – ED-1 Mini UGV (a small electric tracked robot with a modular chassis and swivel arm that comes in both a Science and Demining variant) plus the Tractor.

arma-3-contactSightings of a new terrain, factions, weapons, vehicles, and more

Following its reveal in May, Bohemia Interactive today published a brand-new trailer (watch on YouTube) for the anticipated upcoming Arma 3 spin-off expansion, Arma 3 Contact – which is scheduled for arrival on Steam on July 25, 2019.

Narrated by Game Designer Scott Alsworth, the new trailer goes beyond Arma 3 Contact’s extraterrestrial components – such as its military science fiction singleplayer campaign – to present a showcase of all the other sandbox assets that the Contact expansion will deliver to the wider Arma 3 platform, including a massive terrain, new factions, weapons, vehicles, and more.

The largest addition is a 163 square kilometer Eastern European terrain, which covers the partly abandoned Nadbór region within the larger Polish-speaking country of Livonia. This temperate summer environment is characterized by its many coniferous forests, open wheat fields, towns, railroads, the Biela river, and many interesting landmarks such as an old munitions factory, an abandoned radar station, and dozens of old bunkers from World War II.

To support the new locale, Arma 3 Contact will introduce two small-yet-capable new factions to the game. These are the local Livonian Defense Force and the Russian Spetsnaz. Each of these will be equipped with their own gear and have access to a customized arsenal, and will be complemented by new character faces, as well as Polish or Russian radio protocols. Moreover, the expansion will add 5 new weapons and an unlikely pair of new vehicles in the form of the Mini UGV and Tractor.

In response to first contact, there will also be various new game assets that are more closely connected to the theme of Arma 3 Contact ’s singleplayer campaign. These might have scripted gameplay functionality within the campaign, but will still be available as cosmetic-only items to players and content creators for use in the Arma 3 sandbox (e.g. multiplayer and scenario editor). Perhaps the most striking of these additions is the gear related to CBRN defense, consisting of over-garments, face masks, and breathing apparatus backpacks.

Lastly, Arma 3 Contact will bring along a variety of free bonus content for everyone who owns Arma 3. Specifically, NATO forces will be able to make use of a new woodland camouflage option providing better concealment in the Livonia terrain. Meanwhile, the local civilian population will see its wardrobe expanded with new outfits for farmers, looters, and scientists. To reinforce content creation, all Arma 3 players will receive more than 100 new terrain assets and decorative objects to use in their projects.

Not shown in this sandbox trailer is the headline act of the spin-off expansion: the story-driven “First Contact” singleplayer campaign. Here, the player will take on the role of NATO drone operator, Aiden Rudwell. When a massive alien vessel suddenly enters the Earth’s atmosphere, Specialist Rudwell joins an improvised taskforce and is sent out to investigate the extraterrestrial presence. However, amid the tension and chaos, armed conflict inevitably unfolds.

Arma 3 Contact is expected to land on July 25 and will be made available as DLC for Arma 3 on Steam. People can already pre-order the expansion on Steam and the Bohemia Store for 24.99 EUR / 27.99 USD / 21.99 GBP (plus a temporary 10% discount until one week after release). This will also grant them immediate Sneak Preview Access to the new Livonia terrain, weapons, and more.

arma-3-contactWhat if humanity suddenly encounters extraterrestrial intelligence on Earth?

Bohemia Interactive is excited to present: Arma 3 Contact – a spin-off expansion for their military simulation game Arma 3 (watch trailer). Scheduled for release on Steam (Windows PC) on July 25, the Arma 3 Contact expansion features a military science fiction singleplayer campaign, which will arrive together with a fresh new sandbox terrain, factions, weapons, vehicles, gear, and more.

In the “First Contact” singleplayer campaign, players will assume the role of NATO drone operator Aiden Rudwell, who is deployed to Eastern Europe as part of a military training exercise. When a massive alien vessel suddenly enters the atmosphere, you are sent to investigate the extraterrestrial visitors and determine their intentions. However, amid the tension and chaos, armed conflict inevitably unfolds. Over the course of the campaign, players will engage in field science, electronic warfare, and combat reconnaissance, in an experience delivered in authentic Arma style.

Although conventional infantry engagements can be expected, a significant portion of the campaign will focus on non-shooting gameplay. This involves operating a mini UGV sampling laser and CBRN defense equipment to study strange alien anomalies, as well as controlling the electromagnetic spectrum with the aptly named Spectrum Device. This advanced modern tool – depending on what antenna is fitted – can be used for navigation, intelligence gathering, and deception.

Besides its story-driven campaign, the upcoming Contact expansion also brings various additions to the greater Arma 3 sandbox. One highlight is the massive new 163 km2 terrain set in the fictional Polish-speaking country of Livonia. With this new locale come two smaller yet capable fighting forces: Livonian Defense Force and Russian Spetsnaz. These new factions are equipped with their own combat fatigues, vests, and helmets. Furthermore, the expansion packs 5 additional weapons, 2 new vehicles plus variants, extra gear, and more.

Many of us have wondered if humanity is alone in the universe. I, for one, want to believe we are not. The premise of intelligent life visiting Earth from outer space has fascinated me since childhood, and combining that with the military authenticity of Arma 3 always seemed like it would make for a very cool and unique experience“, said Arma 3 Contact Project Lead, Joris-Jan van ‘t Land. “After our team’s previous project – Laws of War DLC – proved that players enjoy gameplay that’s a little different, our team felt motivated to go for it. I am personally very grateful for the opportunity to explore this theme, and I want to thank all Arma 3 players for their support and making it possible for this dream to come true.
