Fig. 1. Star Trek Armada"Get this guy off my tail!" Kind of burned out on 20th century combat? Activision's Star Trek Armada is just the ticket. As an air combat fanatic I found it a welcome, entertaining change from 109s, F-86s or F-14s. Once you delve into this strategy game you will be powerless to resist it. I got so hooked that I was feeling the onset of carpal tunnel and almost wore a groove in the mouse pad! Over the last three-day weekend holiday I did little else but play S.T.A., much to my wife's displeasure.
The reason I like it is because Star Trek is, well real, like WWII. It has been around on TV and movies in generational sagas that are so familiar that one feels a connection. Thirty years of adventures aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and her ongoing mission tend to make you quite accustomed to the story line as though it was real history. This not a hokey alien-fairy-tale-role-play-alien-bashing romp.
Unlike total fantasy games that have never existed in any other incarnation outside of themselves, Armada feels comfortable. No fantasy Mertzonians vs. the Haballababas in the Rectoctonian star system commanding Boogaloo Class starships. You KNOW the Klingons, The Federation, the Romulans, and the Borg. Ah yes, the evil Borg are there too. Included is a very complete 112 page manual detailing controls, objects, weapons and the theory of the game.
Fig. 2. The Borg 'Assimilator'While the strategic sequence suggests that you commence with Star Fleet and then play the Klingon and Romulan campaigns in that order with the Borg last, you will be powerless to oppose the urge to play for the Borg Collective.
