Airport 2000 Volume 2
by Bob "Groucho" Marks
Wilco says that AP2K Volume 2 is "An Upgrade for Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 and Flight Simulator 2000." While it may be a bit of a boost for FS98 immersion, and would explain the rampant use of FS98 legacy code, there really is little reason to add it to FS2K. The Airport 2000 moniker is more than a bit disingenuous, in fact, it reeks of re-packaging and recycling of outdated product in a desperate attempt to squeeze the last drop out of a very dead fish.
I really wanted to like AP2K. Microsoft’s simulator lacks the truly dynamic environment that Fly! and the now defunct Flight Unlimited III have, and it needs something. Unfortunately, the weird mix of old code, badly scripted adventures, and frame rate busting scenery of Airport 2000 Volume 2 doesn’t hack it. It just emulates the bloat of FS2K.
Really, if you want to add scenery, aircraft, and panels to FS2K, just download them from the Internet and install them yourself. If you don’t like any of them, you can send them to the trash and you won't be out $40(USD) or so. That’s a lot of money to ask for an add-on, especially for a poorly executed one. There are a lot of other things you can do with that money---like sending it to me, for example.
