Optiquest V115

Viewsonic supplies a WIN95/98 install disk, which allows you to select this particular display for maximizing special features like optimal refresh rate and automatic power saving modes. This part is very easy.

When I first unpacked the box the most impressive feature of the G790 was weight (63 pounds.) Hmm.. remind me to invest in a good pulley system for monitor testing. After a visit to my chiropractor I was back in shape and at my desk.

When I first cranked up the power I was impressed by the brightness of the display. I think it was set at about 30% and I had to reduce it slightly. That is a LOT of reserve power, which is necessary when you go to even higher resolutions and refresh rates.

Next I was amazed at the crispness of the image. You want CRISP, you got it! Image quality is superb, due in part to a dynamic focusing beam. I frankly expected the image to be slightly inferior to my G790, but although the monitor takes a bit longer to warm up once warm the image is gorgeous and clear.

I was also surprised that the ambient light from my office window was not more disturbing. The anti-glare and anti-static coating on this display are extremely effective. The V115 is digital and the controls are all accessed via five buttons on the front of the housing below the display. An on screen menu guides you through all functions and is quick and intuitive.

After these initial impressions I was anxious to try out the latest and greatest sims. Let's see... which are the sims with ATMOSPHERE to spare? I cranked up the MiG Alley beta and Falcon 4.0. I swapped out my Diamond Monster Fusion for Guillemot's Xentor 32 for the best possible image quality.

The obvious advantage to a larger screen is not size alone, but the ability to actually place more information on the screen by running in higher resolution modes. At 800x600 a 19" display is really perfect. But go beyond that and you need an even larger display to really appreciate the image.

At 1024x768 MiG Alley is fantastic. Falcon 4.0 also looks great at that resolution, and at 1152x864 on a 21" display is stunning.

SUMMARY

A 21" monitor will remain the dream of some gamers, and the delight of others. This unit is huge and requires a lot of real estate. It will also help warm that cold downstairs office!

I've been running this unit for two months without any glitches. If you have the disposable income, and the steel reinforced desk to support it, the V115 is unbeatable.
