Sound
Game PlaySound in this game is good. You have a lot of options in configuring the quality of the sound in this game. The sound effects are believable, and the dialog is never ending. Actor Bruce Campbell plays the voice of your character, Jake Logan. The dialog seems to be never ending. For example, you could be returning to base after a mission, when you will get into a conversion with another pilot or even Star Patrol. I also like the music in this game. It lends to the immersion factor effectively. Although the actual cut scenes are not to my liking, the music played during the cut scenes is excellent.
How can I sum up this game in one sentence? The game is just plain fun. When I first got the game I had no idea what is was about. After installing it and playing it, I learned that this game is primarily a space combat simulator. There are 11 different ships you can fly in the game, and each one has it's own cockpit and abilities. Ships differ in speed, shield ability, weapons and equipment loadouts, hull and maneuverability.
Each side (Bora and GalSpan) has it's own set of weapons as well. Combat in this game is a lot of fun. You do the same type of work to do in Tachyon that you did in the X-Wing series. You have to manage your ship's energy. You can set power to shields, weapons and burners, transferring power from any of these systems to the other. You can also transfer shield power from aft to front and via versa.
The weapons and equipment offered to you is vast. From laser weapons to cool weapons like the Remote Sapper, which is bomb that you release that attaches itself to the enemy. You can launch multiple of these and then set them all off at once. Equipment is plentiful as well. You can add equipment to your ship that adds abilities like extra ammo, advanced radars, counter measures and more.
Fig. 6. Escort mission complete! One thing that I like is the roll. If you don't have rudder pedals or a twisting joystick, then you use keyboard commands to roll the ship. But if you do, then you use the rudder pedals to roll. At first this seemed strange, but after some practice it becomes natural. You can even coordinate the controls and fly the ship to behave like an airplane.
