SDOE Mission Making Tutorial - Part 2
by Scott Verge

Environment
The Button at the top of the mission editor with the clouds and sun, is the environment button. With this you can control your Date, Clouds, Winds and CD track to play during the mission.

Date is pretty self explanatory, really all it does is set the order that the missions will appear in the mission selection screen making it easier to follow a campaign if you make one.

Clouds are pretty good in this game and often ignored. Unfortunately they also introduce a heavy FPS hit, so watch it for online missions. The one I find most useful while still being ok on FPS is the overcast. This also adds a little atmosphere.

Winds are something to be careful with. Ground handling is already hard in SDOE, so heavy winds can really start a big pile-up on the runway. It can still be used, just take it easy. One time where a good strong wind can be used is when you are flying a carrier mission. Carriers always sail into the wind while launching and retrieving planes. This lowers the speed you need to take off and land. This could also be useful for helping planes get off the ground a little earlier that are having trouble or close calls. The winds are only definable from 8 directions and they are defined as where the wind is coming from, keep that in mind.

The CD track setting is useful for those of you who want to listen to music while flying. It’s pretty useless for online missions though because everyone has a different CD in his or her computer. If you make a mission just for yourself and have a song you really want to listen to during it, then it can be useful plus people that download the mission can always edit the track number. I think a much more useful feature would have been to add controls to the CD player while flying.
