Falcon 4.0 Plus - Part 2
by Bob "Groucho" Marks
We who love Falcon 4.0 are at a crossroads. Which way to go? With so many patches, FMs, and even executables out there, how does one keep an online game clean and workable? Should we even take part in this? Granted, I don’t play online as much as I’d like. I have kids. It’s hard to stop during ingress to a hot target area when the two-year-old is trying to set the dog on fire; in single player I can pause.
It would seem that a unifying body is needed to help merge these paths into a superhighway. This is difficult because there are very real ethical and legal questions that must be hashed out. So, at this point, you have to choose between technical excellence and realism or a modern graphics engine.
I have a feeling that as the hardware sophistication accelerates, some synergy between the hex editing camps and the source code hack will have to take place. If not, Falcon 4.0 will become irrelevant like Flanker 1.X- a technologically obsolete simulation whose fanatical following scoffs at any new sim as “for sissies.” In the end, they look like old hippies who refuse to listen to anything but The Doors.
I, for one, find the thought of ending up like an old hippie repulsive. And I hate The Doors. Much has been learned by the ongoing exploration into the guts of the Falcon 4.0 and you can bet that there is much more to be discovered. So come on, flight; let’s close it up!
